I have a theory, and as ridiculous as it may seem, I call it "The Joy Factor." The basic theory goes a little like this: if it makes you happy, do it. If it makes you unhappy, don’t do it. Perhaps it sounds too simple and silly to be true, yet, if one were to actually follow such words, I wonder where they would all lead.
I once knew a man who loved food. Really, he just loved it so much that he even opened up his own food store with his brother and they had a very good life. Both brothers grew up in a cold water flat in Williamsburg Brooklyn New York during the depression. From a childhood of poverty food meant survival and life.
Many years had passed and one of the brothers had gotten sick. He lost all of his ability to function in the world independently and wound up having to be cared for in a nursing home.
While in the nursing home, he was put on a very strict diet of dry toast with no butter and an extremely salt free and fat free diet. He became all skin and bones. He looked terrible. His eyes began to sink deeply in his once very handsome face. In his earlier years he was a really good looking man. He looked a lot like the actor John Wayne.
His ex-wife came to see him and she was so horrified to see his physical deterioration. He was so frail. He was dying. She told him that if he could figure out how to take control of his physical body functions that she would take him home with her and let him eat anything he wanted. She felt that if she left him there that he would soon be dead.
Although he was physically half parylized, apparently, the offer was just too good to refuse. He went on to live an amazing life for many more years, with joy and happiness and plenty of good food. He put on weight and led a very happy life.
If you think about it, if you lose your joy, then there isn’t a reason to live. Sometimes we can take life so seriously.
Walk the middle road according to the teachings of Buddha. Everything in moderation. Walk your life in balance and harmony. Every moment is so precious. Cherish it and remember The Joy Factor!
